EMDR is a structured form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals resolve the distress associated with traumatic memories. During EMDR therapy, clients focus on a specific traumatic memory while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as following a therapist's hand movements or tapping their knees. The goal of EMDR is to help individuals process and reprocess traumatic memories, leading to a reduction in emotional distress and a change in the way the memory is experienced.
